The restaurant scene in Rome comes in three different types of establishments - the ristoranti, the osteria and the trattoria which are dining establishments separated by price, ambience and menu selection.
The food in Rome is simple, but not fussy and has staple ingredients that distinguished it from the rest of Europe. Dishes are prepared with freshly home grown seasonings and there are certain dishes that are served on designated days of the week. Eating out in Rome is more of a pastime or a social gathering where the emphasis isn’t so much about the food as much as it is about the social interaction.
There are many restaurants in the center of Rome which are close to all major attractions and
Rome hotels, the better ones don’t have staff members inviting you inside. For a wide selection of restaurants head to the area around the Pantheon, here you will find establishments that are trendy, kid friendly, ideal for a business lunch, great for romance and of course with views to die for.
A great place to try classic Italian food without the high price tag is from a trattoria which is a casual ristorante. Try the ‘Pizza Bianca’ which is also known as ‘White Pizza’ as it has no sauce, but is primarily a flatbread with a topping of mozzarella cheese, herbs and olive oil.
The
hotels in Rome serve a wide selection of traditional Roman / Italian food from the basic to the lavishly indulgent where you can sit down and dine in an unhurried, relaxing atmosphere. However, for those visitors on the go, food such as sandwiches and pizza can be purchased from ‘rosticceria’s’ located on the streets and sold from carts.
With an enormous amount of choice of food in Rome there is sure to be something for even the most finicky of eaters.
